Interpretation of van Gogh's Starry Night

Vincent Van Gogh painted several night paintings and the famous Starry Night at the end of 1889. This work shows the geniality, creativity and the strengh of expression of the master artist. An oil painting and a drawing done in June that year proved the fascination that Van Gogh felt for the night themes.
The interpretation of Starry Night by Van Gogh is very personal. Van Gogh said that even without seeing the work of his friends Gaugin and Bernard, he was convinced that the three were working in the same direction. If we compare the work we can see similar points. Vincent also described his ideas and his friends ideas about paint these way: "Gaugin, Bernard and me are here for consoling or to prepare a more consoling painting."

Vincent might have finish painting Starry Night from the window of his bedroom at the Saint-Remy hospital or from his memory. He could not finished the painting in situ, because he had to come back to hospital at certain hours. Starry Night was painted in a few days.
This nocturnal landscape is described like fantasmagoric, is one of most jeopardize and controverted picture of the painter.
