In Starry Night painting the stars dominate the background with the strong and bright colours. It's a crazy movement of waving stars, that combined dark blues of the dark night with the bright light irradiated by the stars. As a metaphor we might interpretate the search for hope and light in between the darkness. Some people might say that this painting and his bedroom at Arles express his craziness, while others only see the geniality of a desperate man in the search for a light in his miserable existence.

A large cypress crosses over the left of the composition, but still doesn't take the eye from the background. The small village is sleepy, we can see the leights in the windows. Represents the solitude of the night. Its a quite and vibrant at the same time.

There are no human figures, which is taken as the representation of silence at night, and the brief parallel outlines that compose the image of the town suggest tranquillity. Starry Night is one of the masterpieces of Van Gogh, destined to mark happening of the later painting.
